Kyusu Teapot Hokuryu Gold

A refined Japanese Kyusu teapot handcrafted by Tatsuo Umehara, third-generation master potter at the renowned Hokuryu Kiln in Tokoname. Known for blending traditional Tokoname craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, Umehara-sensei continues to innovate while honoring the deep-rooted legacy of his family kiln.

This teapot is crafted from Kokudei clay, a refined black Tokoname clay achieved through reduction firing. Unlike painted finishes, the deep charcoal color of this teapot is the result of a traditional firing technique that reduces oxygen in the kiln, transforming the natural red Shudei clay into a rich, matte black. The surface is smooth and subtly textured, giving the piece a quietly elegant presence.

Tatsuo Umehara, born in Tokoname in 1974, became the Master of Hokuryu Kiln in 1998. He is recognized as the inventor of the integrated ceramic tea strainer, a feature now widely used by potters throughout Japan. This Kyusu includes such a built-in ceramic filter, offering a clean and metal-free tea brewing experience.

The teapot holds approximately 240ml and features delicate gold and white floral inlays on the lid, bringing a soft decorative accent to its minimalist form. Whether used daily or as part of a curated teaware collection, this Kyusu is a prime example of Japanese ceramic artistry: functional, beautiful, and timeless.
