Kabusecha ( かぶせ茶), sometimes also called Kabuse Sencha, is a shaded Japanese green tea. For kabusecha, the tea bushes are covered with nets called "kabuse" one week before harvesting, which filter about half of the incoming sunlight. Kabusecha is shaded for about a week, while Gyokuro for comparison, is shaded for up to three weeks. Shading causes the tea plants to produce more chlorophyll and catechins to be broken down, resulting in a milder taste and a strong green colour.
